An apparent Christmas Day stabbing incident results in the arrest of a rural New Canton man.

According to Pike County, Illinois Sheriff David Greenwood, deputies were called to a rural New Canton residence at 9:07 p.m. Wednesday on a report of a stabbing.

Deputies found a 45 year old New Canton male had been stabbed and/or cut more than once. The victim was taken to Hannibal Regional Hospital and later transferred to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis for treatment.

Deputies detained 63 year old Lawrence Nowlan of rural New Canton shortly after the incident.

He was charged Thursday with aggravated battery and lodged in the Pike County Jail, pending a court appearance.
