Having grown up as a redhead, I've always had an appreciation for woodpeckers. They are the odd bird which I identify with also, but did you know seeing two of them on a tree at the same time in Missouri is really bad news especially this time of year.

Why in the world would woodpecker activity of any kind be a bad sign? Well, that depends on who you ask. According to the Farmer's Almanac, seeing two woodpeckers in Missouri hanging out on one tree can only mean one thing...

(*drum roll*)

It means a really bad winter is coming. (allegedly)

According to those who have worked the land for long periods of time and have learned to watch nature to understand what the weather is about to do, woodpeckers sharing a tree means they are desperately stocking up on food supplies knowing that weather will soon make those scarce.

(*shudder*)

I hate snow shovels and have cleared enough Missouri driveways in my lifetime that I'd not be disappointed if I never had it to do again. Based on woodpecker activity, I better start working out.

What are woodpeckers in Missouri doing right now?

Since my wife and kids love birds, we have multiple feeders and (bad news) my wife has seen multiple woodpeckers on the same food source at the same time. This is funny considering she's a real meteorologist yet I'm relying on farm legends to determine the weather.

My hypocrisy only goes so far...
