It's true that many malls that were the go-to places for shopping in the 1980's and 90's are now falling into disrepair, but there's one nearly abandoned mall in Illinois that seems to be rising from the ashes.

I saw this new video share by Stringer media on YouTube which shows what remained of the Hawthorn Mall in Vernon Hills, Illinois from an exploration they did years ago. The word is that Vernon Hills is very much redeveloping this mall and expect it to become a vital place again.

The official Vernon Hills, Illinois redevelopment website says that part of the mall will feature retail spaces on the bottom level with luxury apartments up top. That will be quite an achievement if they can be successful reviving this once-great Illinois shopping place. Perhaps it could be a model for what other malls could do with their former spaces. Time will tell the tale.
