Quake Felt By Many Confirmed Just South of St. Louis, Missouri
No offense to the Missouri Bootheel, but I tend to take earthquakes that happen near the bigger cities a little more seriously and that's exactly what happened Saturday evening when a quake felt by many was confirmed just south of St. Louis.
According to the USGS, it was around 6pm Saturday night, February 1, 2025 when a tremor was strong enough to be felt occurred due south of St. Louis, Missouri near Valmeyer, Illinois. While it was only a 2.3 magnitude quake, it was reportedly felt by dozens in the St. Louis area.
What's interesting about this quake isn't its size which is weak, but the location. According to the University of Memphis Earthquake Center, this tremor happened in almost the exact location as another quake a few months ago.
The Saturday night earthquake was certainly nothing to lose sleep about, but the location bears further observation to see if this area just south of the St. Louis metro area suddenly becomes an active place for these tiny New Madrid Fault quakes.
