New Madrid Fault Quake Shakes Banks of Mississippi River Friday
One of the stronger quakes of the year was recorded Friday along the southern Missouri border as the New Madrid Fault had a quake centered on the river banks of the Mississippi and this one was felt by many.
If I'm understanding the time recorded by the USGS, this quake occurred during the early morning hours of Friday, May 15, 2026. According to the data confirmed by the USGS, it was a 2.6 magnitude quake centered in a peculiar place. If you zoom into the USGS map, you'll see it's quite literally on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River.
While a 2.6 magnitude earthquake is nothing to be alarmed about, I find it interesting that several residents reported feeling it even though it happened in the middle of the night.
Full disclosure: I am an earthquake nerd that pays closer attention to New Madrid Seismic Zone quakes than most people. When I share them, some think I'm trying to be an alarmist. Nope. I just find tremors in this part of Missouri interesting especially when they're strong enough to be felt and occur in interesting places like the banks of the Mississippi. All that being said, I am a big proponent of always being earthquake-aware in Missouri. Even trivial quakes like the one early Friday morning is a reminder that one tremor in the future may not be minor and could change our lives forever. Having an emergency plan is a prudent way to approach life in the very seismically-active state of Missouri.
