I'm a big fan of lakes. They're great. We need more of them. The same can be said about towns near lakes. There's a new national claim that one of the best lake towns in America is in Missouri. There's only one problem. That town has no lake.

The site I speak of is no small potatoes brand either. Country Living recently named the 40 best lake towns in America. Among the top 40, you'll see a well-known Missouri destination - Verailles.

What's the problem with Versailles, Missouri?

The answer - Nothing. Nothing at all. Versailles is a wonderful place. But, look at an overhead map of Versailles as seen on Google.

Notice anything? No lakes. One of the best lake towns in Missouri, but no lake? What gives? There's one key phrase in the Country Living article that explains what's happening. They say that Versailles, Missouri is "this beautiful town that serves as gateway to the Lake of the Ozarks". It is "close" to Lake of the Ozarks.

When I think of a "lake town", I imagine a town nestled up against a large body of water, but that's just me. Versailles is certainly a popular place and everyone drives through it on the way to the Lake of the Ozarks unless you're coming down through Eldon.

I suppose I should be happy that Country Living mentioned a Missouri place at all. I think it would have made more sense if they had named Osage Beach one of the best lake towns, but that's just me talking.
