Missouri Warns a Winged Serial Killer May Be in Your Backyard
This has made me think twice about the bird feeder in our yard in Missouri. There's a new warning from the state about an innocent looking bird that just might be a serial killer and, yes, it might be in your backyard now.
The Missouri Department of Conservation just shared this interesting post on their Facebook page about a bird I've never heard of, but I will now be watching out for. They say it looks like a songbird, but might be a serial killer?
The bird they're talking about is the Loggerhead Shrike. They say it's call sounds like "schack-schack". They are known as the butcher bird since "they often impale their small prey items on thorns or barbed wire fences". Yikes. These are truly vicious little birds.
This serial killer bird is common all over the state of Missouri, but that doesn't mean you'll see one.
Before you decide you need to defend yourself from this tough little bird, don't. They are helpful to Missouri in that they keep "big bugs, little birds, and mice" in check. Don't like big bugs? Then you'll love the Loggerhead Shrike. If you look in your backyard and see small birds impaled on a post, then you know the butcher bird is nearby.
