1 of the World’s Absolutely Most Dangerous Lakes is in Illinois?
It makes perfect sense when you think about it, but I must admit that I was more than a little surprised to learn that one of the world's most dangerous lakes is in Illinois. Few water places can rival it for elements that can take your life.
When I found this recent ranking of the world's most dangerous lakes, I immediately thought of Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri which is frequently considered one of the most perilous lakes in America. It did NOT make this list.
A-Z Animals decided to take a look at lakes around the world and, sure enough, one of the top 12 most dangerous is considered an Illinois lake.
What Illinois lake is considered one of the world's most dangerous?
Answer - Lake Michigan
What threw me off was the fact that while Lake Michigan obviously borders Illinois, it's not a lake that I consider to be IN the state of Illinois. My bad. Technically, it very much is.
What makes Lake Michigan in Illinois so dangerous?
The A-Z Animals article says "The geometry of Lake Michigan makes it specifically vulnerable to deadly currents, which are exacerbated by piers and docks, resulting in deaths and injuries."
They also noted that Lake Michigan has more injuries and fatalities in the Fall months as temperatures dip drastically.
It's been said that you learn something new every day. For me, this is that thing. The deadly Illinois lake known as Lake Michigan.
