Many Illinois Drivers Getting Fake Toll Scam Text Messages Now

This might be the most prevalent text scam currently making the rounds in Illinois. I've seen numerous drivers showing text messages they're receiving claiming they owe toll charges, but it's not true.

Here are just a few of the messages I've seen shared on the Illinois sub-Reddit this week revealing an authentic-looking test message claiming to be from the Illinois Tollway.

I went straight to the source and the Illinois Tollway confirms all of these individuals have received a phishing scam text. Here's what they had to say about it:

"The Tollway has been alerted to a text message phishing scam claiming that recipients owe money for unpaid tolls and detailing a specific outstanding toll amount. These are not legitimate messages from the Illinois Tollway."

What can you do if you get these fake texts?

The Illinois Tollway says "if you receive a text, please check your account online or call our customer service center at 1-800-UC-IPASS (1-800-824-7277) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays." They also encourage everyone to report this to the Internet Crime Complaint Center to help locate whoever is responsible for this theft attempt.
