Illinois Steel Mill Shuts Down, 253 Jobs Lost
This is a sad case of the little guy having to give up when trying to compete with the big boys. A steel mill in Illinois has alerted the state that it will cease operations which will result in the job loss of 253 workers.
I knew this was bad news when I saw the Illinois Work Net site updated with a WARN notice from a steel company in Illinois with the number 253 workers attached to it. It said that Alton Steel, Inc. located at 5 Cut Street in Alton, Illinois was closing. The scheduled layoffs of 253 workers starts almost immediately with the cuts being effective January 31, 2026.
I came across a follow-up report from KSDK in St. Louis that said the Alton Steel CEO stated the company had tried to modernize the Alton factory, but that trying to keep up with larger, publicly-traded companies in their industry was too much to overcome. The sudden plant closure is now something that all the workers families now have to figure out how to deal with.
The Illinois Work Net Center site says that the state has experienced layoffs for 1,426 workers in just the past 30 days. That's a sad start to the year for those whose employment is now in jeopardy when companies decide to shut their doors.
