If you're like me, an invasion by a foreign army seems unlikely and in most cases really unbelievable. However, the state of Missouri is warning that evil foreign agents are already here (so to speak) and they are targeting our water towers.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has an alert called "Cyber Security Warning to Water and Wastewater Systems". It says they are "alerting the water and wastewater systems sector to new information regarding a potential cyber threat to United States critical infrastructure. All water and wastewater system owners and operators should read this alert".

The details are fascinating, but here's the bottom line. There are Russian, Chinese and other enemy foreign entities that are threatening to shut down the water sources in Missouri and other parts of the nation and they don't have to physically invade to do it either. Thanks to virtually all Missouri water systems being online, a targeted cyberattack could cause critical issues with even our small Missouri communities suddenly losing access to vital water sources.

Think this sounds outlandish? It's already happened in Texas as Business Insider reported that a small Texas town had its water tower attacked by Russian agents. They were able to infiltrate the network controlling that small town's water supply and caused the tower to overflow. This same Russian group attacked a hospital in Pennsylvania years ago, too.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is working to be proactive and advise local water authorities to check their network security and report any breaches quickly. To quote a famous Tom Clancy book, there is a clear and present danger to Missouri's vital water supplies.
