When I get my proper tax bill twice a year I just get chills as to how much I pay, but compared to Lake County, Illinois. Tax Rates put that county as the highest for property taxes in Illinois. On average Lake County (which is located in the north of Chicago) collects $6,285.00 in taxes. WHAT? Compared to the median average of the state which is just over $3,500, Lake County has almost doubled that.

The exact property tax levied depends on the county in Illinois the property is located in. Lake County collects the highest property tax in Illinois, levying an average of $6,285.00(2.19% of median home value) yearly in property taxes.

With the highest, there has to be a low property tax county and there is. Hardin County collects on average $447. Known as Little Egypt, Hardin County is located in the southern part of the state close to the Kentucky border. Not that I would like to live that far south, but man paying $447 for property taxes sounds enticing.
