WalletHub.com has just published a list called Cities with the Biggest Homicide Rate Problems, and Kansas City finds itself 5th on the list. The only cities that WalletHub says have a bigger homicide rate problem than Kansas City are Atlanta, Baltimore, Detroit, and Las Vegas. On the site they say...

"In order to determine which cities have the biggest homicide rate problems, WalletHub compared 45 of the largest U.S. cities based on per capita homicides in Q4 2022, as well as per capita homicides in Q4 2022 vs. Q4 2021 and Q4 2020."

What is really concerning for Kansas City is that the rates for homicides in Kansas City during quarter 4 of 2022 went up compared to quarter 4 of 2021, and that's as the national average went down in homicide rates.

Now is Kansas City one of the 5 "Murder Capitols?" I would lean towards saying no, but the city is trending in the wrong direction. To make the claim you are one of the 5 murder capitols in the US you should look at murders per capita in my opinion, and Kansas City ranks 7th in the US in that category for quarter 4 of 2022. BUT...you can't say the same for St. Louis, St. Louis was ranked 2nd in the country in murders per capita, and so I feel confident in saying that St. Louis is one of the 5 murder capitols in the US, even though it is heading in the right direction compared to Kansas City.
