Illinois Hosts America’s Second-Largest Thanksgiving Parade
Yes, the New York Thanksgiving Day Parade is the OG when it comes to holiday parades — but it’s not the only one. Illinois is actually home to the second-largest Thanksgiving Day Parade in the nation.
Origins: The 1934 Christmas Caravan
What began as a Christmas Caravan in 1934 to lift the spirits of those struggling during the Great Depression has grown into one of the best holiday parades in the country. The Chicago Thanksgiving Day Parade continues to draw bigger crowds every year, both on the streets and among those participating in the festivities.
Facts About the Chicago Thanksgiving Parade
A lot can happen in 90 years, and the Chicago Thanksgiving Parade is proof of that. Since it first began, the parade has had 10 different official names and has become one of the largest and most beloved parades in the nation. This year, parade banners will decorate 156 light poles throughout the city, and participants from all over the world will travel to Chicago to take part.

Today’s Parade: Balloons, Bands and Global Participants
While the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York may attract the biggest crowds, Chicago’s version holds its own in popularity. Like Macy’s parade, the Chicago Thanksgiving Parade is broadcast on WGN and has been since 2007.
So, if you want that festive parade experience but don’t want to battle the massive crowds of New York City, just head north to Chicago. You’ll still get to enjoy marching bands, giant balloons, and amazing stage performances, all with that Midwest charm.

I never had the chance to see the parade when I lived in NYC (it’s still on my bucket list!), but I’d love to compare the two someday and see which one truly takes the crown. Macy’s has the history, but Chicago just might have the heart.
