St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter is retiring from baseball. During a press conference on Wednesday the Cardinals announced Carpenter's retirement, and a three year contract extension for manager Mike Matheny.

The St. Louis Cardinals Facebook page posted the following comment regarding today's news:

After a 15-year Major League career that included a Cy Young award, 3 All-Star selections and 144 career wins, Chris Carpenter is retiring from baseball. On behalf of the entire Cardinals organization, we would like to congratulate Carp on a tremendous career and thank him for his many contributions to the Cardinals tradition." - Facebook

Mike Matheny led the Cardinals to the National League Championship Series in both 2012 and 2013, his first two years as a Major League manager. The Cardinals won the pennant in 2013, but lost The World Series to the Boston Red Sox. Matheny was formerly a Major League catcher who played for St. Louis from 2000 - 2004.
