The spring 2015 turkey season was a successful one for Illinois hunters.

In a press release from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, it was reported that hunters statewide bagged 14,999 turkeys. That compares to 13,514 turkeys taken in 2014.

The increase in numbers is attributed to a boost in the population of young turkeys in 2014, particularly in west central Illinois.

Speaking of which, the individual county numbers for turkey harvest for the spring season showed Adams and Pike counties were in the top five. Adams County hunters harvested 389 turkeys, while hunters in Pike County bagged 341 birds.

The fall shotgun and archery turkey seasons in Illinois begin in October.
