Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has filed a request that over 60 percent of the state be declared a major disaster area.

In a press release, Nixon announced his request to the federal government that 70 of Missouri’s 114 counties be made eligible for public and/or individual assistance.

The request comes as a result of several severe storm systems that have ripped through the area since mid May.

The counties listed in Nixon’s request for public assistance include Audrain, Knox, Lewis, Lincoln, Marion, Monroe, Pike, Ralls, Schuyler and Shelby counties in northeast Missouri.

Individual assistance is also being sought for residents in Knox, Lewis and Marion counties.
