The weather is proving to be a formidable opponent to safe travel this weekend. The National Weather Service says a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until midnight Saturday. Freezing drizzle is expected to turn into light snow this afternoon.  Snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches additional is possible, with a light glazing of ice.

The NWS has also issued a Wind Chill Advisory beginning at midnight Saturday.  Although the precip is expected to subside late tonight, conditions are expected to worsen when temperatures plummet to near 0.  The temperature drop along with north winds gusting up to 30 miles an hour will make for dangerous conditions.  The wind chill could be as low as -24 at times.

Travel conditions are expected to worsen when even treated surfaces refreeze, making for slippery roads and sidewalks.

A message on the MoDOT website advises folks to stay home if possible through Sunday. Travel should be limited to only what is absolutely essential.  If you must travel, take extra precautions in case you encounter difficulty.  To check road conditions including winter weather conditions and traffic speeds, please check MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map at http://traveler.modot.org/map/. The map is also available as a free app for Apple and Android devices. The map denotes locations where the road is closed with a red exclamation point.
