Suddenly Massive Sinkhole Opens Up in Illinois Closing a Highway

You might want to be careful what the earth underneath you is doing if you're driving through Illinois today as a massive sinkhole suddenly opened up and even caused a highway to close.

I saw this huge opening in the earth shared by the Illinois Department of Transportation on Facebook. It happened on highway 185 between Hillsboro and Coffeen.

This area of highway 185 in Illinois is due east of the St. Louis area.

There's no update as of this writing as to how long I-185 in Illinois will be closed as authorities deal with this sinkhole.

According to what has been shared by the state of Illinois on X, this sinkhole has actually increased in size since the original appearance of this expanse.
