Authorities in Illinois are warning that police will be out in force this Super Bowl weekend to catch drunken drivers.

Over the past five years, 18 people were killed in road accidents on Super Bowl Sunday. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, half of those deaths were in accidents involving a driver who had been drinking.

The department is urging football fans to plan ahead and make sure they have a designated driver if they expect to be drinking alcohol.

The Illinois State Police and more than 100 local police departments and sheriff's offices will be patrolling the roadways.

Authorities are also reminding those hosting parties that they can be held liable and prosecuted if someone they served alcohol ends up in a drunken-driving crash.
