Illinois Man Convicted of Trying to Stab Wife to Death
A southwestern Illinois man faces up to 30 years in prison after being convicted of trying to kill his estranged wife on Valentine's Day and leading police on a chase.
A St. Clair County jury found 61-year-old Dwight Long guilty of attempted first-degree murder Wednesday. He was also convicted of aggravated domestic battery, aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer and violating a protection order.
Authorities say Long stabbed Karva Pitts twice in the back on Feb. 14 after she left work at a Swansea eye surgeon's office. Pitts had obtained a protection order against Long.
Long then drove off before leading Swansea and Illinois State Police on a chase that ended with his arrest.
His sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 9.
