Budget Mess Forces Carl Sandburg College to Suspend Adult Classes
Carl Sandburg College will suspend adult education classes Jan. 1 because of the state budget crisis.
College President Lori Sundberg tells the Galesburg Register-Mail that the state-funded adult education, English as a second language, and literacy programs are up in the air because lawmakers in Springfield have been unable to agree on a spending plan.
Sundberg says the school is the "sole provider"; there are no other places in the area for coursework. Sandberg remains a testing site for the GED.
The school offers two adult education courses that prepare students for the high school equivalency certificate. Sundberg says the school hasn't taken new students since October.
She says even a speedy budget resolution will delay restoration of the programs until fall.
