Tragedies

It sounds like something you'd see at the end of a movie, but it was a real event that happened in Missouri nearly two centuries ago. In 1855, a Missouri bridge collapsed and took a train and many lives down to the river below.

Christmas Eve is normally a special time with family that is supposed to be joyous. 91 years ago, it was the opposite for a tiny Illinois town when a coal mine disaster claimed 54 souls.

It was such a glorious vessel on the river. The steamboat Sultana carried over 2,300 people up the Mississippi River. However, it would be forever remembered as the boat that would claim over 1,100 lives in 1865.

There's a reason why this Illinois train sat abandoned for many years just outside of O'Hare Airport in Chicago. It has a sad history dating back to a tragedy in Downer's Grove, Illinois 30 years ago.
