It's a lot to ask of young animals that are only 10 days old, but 6 Missouri wolves are off to New Mexico to live in the wild with the hope that they will help save their species.

The Endangered Wolf Center in St. Louis, Missouri just shared the news about 6 tiny wolves who have a great adventure and responsibility. It says there are only 7 founders of the endangered Mexican wolf population still around. That's why on May 5, 2025, 6 wolves who were born in Missouri just 10 days prior were sent to the wilds of New Mexico where they will have the chance to live in the wild.

Each of these pups have been placed in active wild dens in New Mexico as conservationists hope to revive this endangered wolf species and bring them back to where they were before humans interfered. There has been some good news in these efforts as there have been 9 consecutive years of population growth among these wolves with a minimum of 286 currently alive and kicking.

How do they know that these wolves will be accepted by the wild packs in New Mexico?

They say that wild wolf mothers are very nurturing and will accept wolf pups into their packs just like they are their own. It's very possible that the introduction of the wolf pups from Missouri will help bring this species back from the brink before it's too late.
