It has not been a good day in the package delivery industry. UPS which currently has 188 Illinois locations has announced plans to fire 20,000 workers and many locations will close, too.

Fast Company is reporting today that in a quarterly earnings call, UPS announced some drastic measures to cut costs. Here are the raw numbers of what they plan to do:

  • 20,000 jobs to be eliminate by year end
  • 70 UPS locations will close
  • Cost savings will total $3.5 billion dollars

How many UPS locations are in Illinois right now?

Scrape Hero says that Illinois is one of the top states for UPS distribution centers with a total of 188 currently open. The official UPS locator shows a center in nearly every Illinois town and city. It is unclear as of the time of this writing exactly how many Illinois UPS workers and centers will be affected by this mass layoff revenue plan.

These announced cuts dwarf what was expected from the company as shared by The Street.

While we wait for the exact numbers, you would have to think that Illinois will be greatly impacted by the changes that UPS will be making. This article will be updated once exact locations for closure are provided.
