I demand a recount. A brand new ranking of the happiest cities in America paints a bleak picture for the Gateway City.

I would ask that you unhappy people not shoot the messenger. This is the annual list just shared by WalletHub. They've just ranked the happiest cities in America and, if you look at their map, you'll see big circles and little circles. The larger the circle, the more unhappy the population there is. That's why St. Louis is quite large.

How do they know who's happy or not in St. Louis?

That's a very valid question and it appears they've broken it down to 3 main categories: Emotional and Physical Well Being, Income & Employment and Community and Environment Rank. If you look at the numbers for each category for St. Louis, you'll see the home of the Cardinals got dinged seriously for all of them. To WalletHub's credit, they say they used 29 different metrics based on 4 different research studies which is a lot of data. However, I have some questions.

Riddle me this, Batman. How can you know how happy a city is if you don't talk directly to the people? I'd put much more weight on a study like this if they sampled 10,000 people from the major metro areas. I realize that's hard and I wouldn't want to do it, but that would be the real measure of happiness in an area if you really want to know the overall vibe there.

Hey, at least they didn't call St. Louis the murder capital for once.
