Thanks to many forecasts issued well in advance, we knew that Missouri and Illinois would be getting the first real measurable snowfall over the Thanksgiving weekend. What we didn't expect is some places in both states ended up with a pretty decent amount of snow over the past day or two.

I saw the snowfall measurement totals just shared by the National Weather Service in St. Louis for both Missouri and Illinois. As you can see by the map they shared, there wasn't a big band of heavy snowfall, but there were several in the middle of the blue band that nearly saw a half foot of snow.

Mascoutah, Illinois had 4.6 inches of snow dumped on them with Columbia not missing that total by much with 4.2 inches.

When will the next meaningful snowfall happen in Missouri and Illinois?

It's worth mentioning that some forecasters are watching computer model runs that seem to show the time period around December 14 as the next possible snow event although there is great uncertainty right now about whether it will be snow, rain, sleet or all of the above.

While most of Missouri and Illinois will see warmer temperatures return briefly by the middle of this week, we're beginning to enter the season when these winter systems will systematically move through our part of America and bring us the chance that we'll need our snow shovels.
