Missouri’s 5th Lowest Electric Rates in America—Bills Don’t Show It
This is one of those instances where the numbers are the truth, but they don't feel like the truth. New data shows that Missouri has among the lowest electricity rates in America. Tell that to a Missouri family paying the utility bill right now and they'll likely look at you with disbelief.
This is a touchy subject for me as I recently shared my Missouri utility bill that nearly quadrupled in July. That made me curious about how Missouri compares to the rest of America when it comes to electric bills. The truth shocked me (no electricity pun intended) as Choose Energy reveals that Missouri has the 5th lowest electric rate in America as of July 1, 2025.
Surprised? I sure was. Here are some key numbers from that study:
- Missouri electricity rate in 2025 12.83 ¢/kWh
- Missouri electricity rate in 2024 12.35 ¢/kWh
- Percentage change year-over-year 3.9
- Overall electricity rate ranking - 5
Why does the utility bill struggle in Missouri feel so much worse this year?
As a man, I will admit that I sometimes have selective amnesia and only remember things I want to. If I'm being honest with myself, I do remember a similar jump in the cost of electric during the summer of 2024, too. It was painful then and it's painful now. Perhaps this should be something to make me feel thankful that Missouri's utility bill strain isn't worse than it is, but that's easier said than done as I prepare to hand over more than $400 to the utility company in less than 2 weeks. Ouch.
