Food is a very subjective thing. What is wonderful for one person might be atrocious for another. However, I believe nearly everyone in Missouri that has eaten there would agree that a place "on the Hill" in St. Louis being named one of the top 50 best old-school Italian restaurants is a no-brainer.

There are few restaurants in Missouri more revered than Charlie Gitto's On The Hill

There's a brand new ranking of the best old-school Italian spots in America by Cheapism and among their top 51 is Charlie Gitto's that has been a must-stop Italian place in the St. Louis area as long as I can remember. Their official website says "locally loved, nationally recognized" and that's accurate. Charlie Gitto's is famous for many things, but especially the toasted ravioli. Their seafood pasta is really a hidden gem you shouldn't miss, though.

According to stories told, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa secretly ate together at Charlie Gitto's back in 1998 during their famous (or is that infamous?) Roger Maris home run chase. I've heard that great Italian pasta gives you strength, so there's likely some truth to that. There's a reason why countless other celebrities often frequent Charlie Gitto's On The Hill. It's about as iconic as St. Louis gets when it comes to food for the past four decades.
