Once a county jail, the historic Jail Hill Inn in Galena, Illinois, has been transformed into one of the state’s best-rated bed and breakfasts.

Built in 1878 to replace the previous jail that had burned down, this solid stone building cost $16,000 and served its original purpose for nearly a century. After closing in 1977, it sat vacant for over 25 years, with several failed restoration attempts that left it slowly deteriorating.

Today, Jail Hill Inn has six spacious suites, each taking up an entire floor. Every suite is furnished with plush king beds, spa-like bathrooms with soaking tubs, and inviting sitting areas, creating an atmosphere of relaxation and elegance.
