Missouri and Illinois Have Lost 30 GameStop Stores in 2026

How the mighty have fallen. The most popular video game store for the past few decades, GameStop, has kicked off 2026 with a huge scale-back already closing 30 Missouri and Illinois stores in the first 3 weeks of the year.

I've just checked the updated GameStop store closures list and it's become massive. Here are the Illinois GameStop stores that have closed just since January 1, 2026:

According to my admittedly limited math skills, that makes 18 Illinois GameStop stores closed in 2026 while 12 in Missouri have now shut their doors forever. I hope the remaining stores can hang in there because there are very few other options for purchasing used video games other than eBay and I'd rather yank teeth out than deal with that. With the continuing move to digital game downloads, the store closures by GameStop are not completely unexpected, but it's the rate of closure so far in Missouri and Illinois that is surprising.
