FBI Warns Missouri Gmail & Outlook Users of New Ransomware Attack
Even if you think you're too savvy to be caught unaware by ransomware, you need to take heed to a new warning just issued by the FBI to Missouri Gmail and Outlook users. There's a new method villains are trying to use and it can cost you a fortune if you get hit.
This new warning from America's Cyber Defense Agency wing of the FBI should get your attention especially if you use Gmail or Outlook for your email purposes. This new ransomware attack is called Medusa.
What is Medusa and why is it a problem for Missouri Gmail and Outlook users especially?
This method uses unpatched vulnerabilities in Gmail and Outlook that can result in two very bad results. First, the ransomware will lock your data. Second, the Medusa ransomware affiliate organizations will demand huge sums to unlock your information or they'll threaten to release your private data onto the web.
If you don't respond to the ransomware demands within 48 hours, the Medusa originator will reach out by phone or email and demand a huge sum in cryptocurrency. Amounts have been reported to be upwards of $10,000 per day.
What can you do to prevent becoming a Medusa victim?
Use two-factor authentication for Gmail, Outlook and any other important website or app that you rely on. Make sure all of your applications and browsers are fully up-to-date to avoid having an old version that has a vulnerability that bad guys can use to try and rip you off.
