I like to think that I'm brave, but I'm also sometimes stupid. (Somewhere I imagine my wife is saying "Amen!") That's why I have to remind myself not to put my hand down mysterious holes in the ground in Missouri and that's especially true this time of year. I'll explain.

I saw this topic come up today as Yahoo News warned to "beware of giant spiders". They're not wrong. It's the time of year when Missouri has a certain type of arachnid goes looking for a mate and they live in these holes.

If you poke this hole with a stick, this is what will appear.

The next couple of months are when the Texas Brown Tarantulas begin to come out of their holes and begin looking for a mate in Missouri. Fortunately, for those of us (like me) who have spider phobias galore, this mainly happens in the southern half of the state. If the Missouri River ever dries up where these spiders can make it further north, I'm heading to Canada.

Just know if you see a mysterious hole in the ground and decide to put your hand down there out of curiosity, you might be in for an unpleasant and very hairy (and maybe painful) surprise.

Nightmare fuel is full now.
