If you'd like to look at this from a glass-half-full perspective, the sinkhole that swallowed the middle of a soccer field in Alton, Illinois recently is an overachiever as new drone video shows it continues to expand in size.

It was just over two weeks ago when security camera video revealed a massive sinkhole that suddenly opened up in the middle of an Alton, Illinois soccer field. Drone video just shared by KSDK in St. Louis shows that it's size is increasing.

Reports say that Alton officials have been allowed by the government to dig and research what the root cause of the sinkholes appearance is and now Fox 2 in St. Louis is reporting that "significant progress is being made".

It's no mystery that both Missouri and many parts of Illinois have massive cave systems underneath and the multitude of water sources also contributes to sometimes unpredictable land cave-ins. It was just 3 months ago when a huge sinkhole opened up in Illinois and was so massive that it closed a highway for a time.

A hiker in Missouri also shared video of a sinkhole that just suddenly appeared in a remote wooded area. It happens more often in both Missouri and Illinois than you might think. Still, the mystery of the sinkhole in Alton, Illinois continues to be researched and hopefully investigators will learn exactly what's going on so perhaps we can all understand and avoid future incidents like this in the future.
