Celebrating a Literary Icon: Tom Sawyer Turns 150

The beloved character created by Mark Twain is marking a major milestone this year, and the Hannibal Convention and Visitors Bureau is starting the celebration with a parade on March 28 at 10 a.m.

A Timeless Classic: Tom Sawyer's Journey to Fame

The book was published in June of 1876 by author Mark Twain and follows the adventures of Tom Sawyer and his friends through caves and along the Mississippi River in Hannibal.

While it didn’t see immediate success upon its release, the novel eventually became a bestseller and helped pave the way for Mark Twain’s literary career. Today, it’s considered a masterpiece of American literature and is also notable as the first novel written on a typewriter.
