The Blood Worm Moon Eclipse is Upon Us and Visible in Illinois
Celestial events seem to be occurring at an increased pace. Or, maybe I’m just older and have been paying more attention to them. These things are mapped out years in advance. The next one is this week. The Blood Worm moon Eclipse happens Thursday night into Friday morning.
The March full moon is called the worm moon. Traditionally this is when the ground is getting softer and warmer and the earthworms emerge. It’s a sign of spring beginning. The Blood moon part is about the eclipse and what the moon looks like when in full umbra.
The eclipse will begin late Thursday (around 11p) and continue into Friday. After midnight the earth’s shadow will begin to be visible on the moons surface. The full eclipse will occur near 1:30a lasting for almost an hour. The forecast appears to be for clouds to minimal Wednesday into Thursday allowing for excellent visibility.

There is another lunar eclipse on the schedule for September this year (2025) but it won’t be visible for most of North America. So, be prepared for lots of social media pics for the Blood Worm moon eclipse. The next one won’t be visible over us until March 3, 2026. The last Blood Worm moon eclipse we had was only visible west of the rocky mountains in the USA and was March 27, 1978.
