Quincy, Illinois' German heritage runs deep. There is the sister city of Hereford, Germany. There is a robust Germanfest/Oktoberfest that is enjoyed by most everyone in the city. There is even a bar with a German name called the Ratskeller housed in the former Dick Brothers Brewery. So where is the German restaurant?

There are many places to eat in Quincy that focus on the flavors of specific countries: Greek, Italian, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Indian, Mexican and Japanese. There is a United Nations of food in Quincy, and those places and flavors are delicious. But no German centered restaurant with cuisine from the homeland?

If there were a German restaurant that was to open, would it be better to have it in a portion of Dick Brothers? On the south side of downtown Quincy in Calftown? Or would it only thrive if it were along Broadway somewhere?

Is Calftown in Quincy the proper place for a German restaurant?

Seems like the most natural thing for Quincy to have a German based restaurant. When I moved here in 2001 there was no steakhouse, no barbeque joint and most of the current local global flavors hadn’t been established. In 2025 they thrive. Wo ist Das Deutsche Essen?
