You may have salted your driveway and steps at your residence to prevent slippery surfaces. Salt can successfully achieve this to varying degrees on flat surfaces. Many driveways across the Show-Me State are sloped to many different degrees depending upon your neighborhood or topography of your land.

The molasses addition to salt brine is to help it stick better throughout the winter storm while still keeping the snow and ice melting properties of the rock salt.

There are municipalities that have begun to employ this mixture of salt brine and molasses to pre-treat roadways before winter storms. The molasses inclusion seems to be effective at lower temperatures compared to just salt brine.

Some solutions will include vinegar, wood ashes, or even cheese (???) mixed with the salt brine.
