Iconic Clothing Store Set to Close for Good at Illinois Mall
Another one bites the dust. A major clothing department store has announced the closing of 66 stores and one of those locations is in Illinois.
For years, Macy's has been slowly closing locations that are not performing well and the news came down that the Macy's in White Oak Mall in Springfield, Illinois is part of that 66.
I was recently at the White Oak Mall, and surprisingly, quite a few stores are still there. Macy's announced last year that, according to CNN, it will be closing 150 locations by 2026. The announcement of which locations are closing, so far, in 2025 was just announced. Two Missouri locations are closing as well, one located in Kansas City and one in St. Louis.
Have we seen the last of a traditional mall? Yes, malls are thriving and making money, but as we've seen here in our area that is not the case. What will malls become,? We know what the Quincy Town Center is trying to become, and the White Oak Mall has business offices in what used to be Sears.

Will the soon-yo-be empty Macy's location become office space? Time will tell, but the mall atmosphere sadly is dismissing as time goes on.
