Over the weekend a new addition arrived at the St. Louis Zoo in the form of “Jet”, a two hundred fifty pound baby male Asian elephant and he’s the first elephant born at the historic zoo via artificial insemination.

“Jet’s” mother is “Jade” who was born at the St. Louis Zoo herself in 2007. “Jet” is now a fourth generation elephant at the zoo with a gemstone name   The young pachyderm is doing well per the zoo’s curator of mammals. “Jet’s” father is currently housed at the Denver zoo and is named “Jake”. “Jake was born at a lion safari in Ontario, Canada.

The ecstatic Animal Care team at the St. Louis zoo is providing twenty four hour round the clock care for mamma “Jade” and “Jet”.

Gestation lasts almost 2 full years for elephants, and the anticipation has been growing for “Jet’s” arrival. As he grows he will certainly become a "must see" member of the St. Louis Zoo.
