The Illinois exodus continues. In 2023 per the US Census Bureau the Land of Lincoln had 300,000 residents move to other states.

Yes, there were people coming to Illinois. Over 200,000 new residents. But the net loss is over 93,000 and that’s third worst in the nation, only in front of New York and California.

So where are people from Illinois moving to? Indiana. Seriously. Hard to argue that it’s the weather that is chasing people away when the top spot they land is the non-tropical Hoosier state to the tune of over 29,000.

Florida however is at number 2 with over 27,000 Illinois residents moving there last year.

Number 3 is Wisconsin at almost 27,000. Wisconsin is even colder and more snowy….

People from Illinois also moved to Texas in numbers over 24,000.

So are Chicagoans leaving Illinois to live in Indiana and Wisconsin but still work in Illinois? Maybe some, northwest Indiana is a rapidly growing area, but the counties surrounding Indianapolis are the fastest growing in Indiana. The fastest growing county in Wisconsin is Dane county where the University of Wisconsin/Madison is.

Governor Pritzker keeps claiming that Illinois population isn’t dwindling, but the numbers over the last decade plus are hard to ignore.

While Illinois is shrinking, Texas, Florida and North Carolina are the states where people are moving en masse. Those states have net gained over 100,000 people each just in 2023.
