A southern Illinois woman has been sentenced to a decade in prison after admitting she threatened a mother with a knife, tying her up before taking the victim's newborn son.

WSIL-TV reports that 44-year-old Karen Nichols of rural Anna was sentenced this week after pleading guilty to kidnapping and armed robbery counts in Union County.

The baby's grandfather has said his daughter and Nichols became friends through social networking, and Nichols offered to help the new mom from Johnston City.

Nichols was arrested at her home a short time after the June attack. The boy wasn't harmed.

Court records show that Nichols will be credited for 129 days she spent jailed.
