A once-in-a-lifetime event is 200 years in the making. Hannibal will celebrate its bicentennial in 2019.

Hannibal Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Gail Bryant received city council approval to hire an events director to plan and promote the milestone.  Bryant says the celebration will begin in early 2019 and continue into the fall. She says the magnitude of the event warrants the additional staffing.  Salary cost estimates for the temporary position were not made available. The Bicentennial Event Director will be hired for three years, beginning in 2018.

The selection process is expected to begin next month. After candidate interviews and salary negotiations, the council could make a final selection in early November.

Moses Bates is credited with being the founding father of Hannibal, settling in the river town in 1819.
