The two year old child that was allegedly abused by a LaGrange man last week has died.

Lewis County Sheriff David Parrish reports that the abuse victim, identified only as T.A., died at St. Louis Children’s Hospital at 12:16 p.m. Tuesday.

LaGrange Police had been alerted last Friday that the child had been taken to Blessing Hospital with severe injuries.

An investigation led to the arrest Friday of 34 year old Marcus Mays of LaGrange by Quincy Police.

Mays was originally charged with endangering the welfare of a child and possession of a controlled substance.

Then, on Monday, the Lewis County Prosecutor upgraded the charge to abuse or neglect of a child. Mays is alleged to have inflicted serious injuries by hitting the child in the head numerous time with his hand.

The matter is now being referred to the prosecutor’s office for upgraded charges pending an autopsy of the child.

Mays remains in the Lewis County Jail on $500,000 bond.
