Three Years Ago Tonight The Cavemen and Gems went 18 innings at Clemens Field
Tuesday marked the third anniversary of the longest game in Hannibal Cavemen and Quincy Gems history.
One of the great things about baseball is that it is not governed by a clock. that made for a memorable night--and early morning in 2013.
On June 28th the Cavemen and Gems battled for 18 innings at Clemens Field before Hannibal won 10-9 on a single by Jerod Smith. Hannibal led 7-4 after four innings. A four run top of the sixth tied the game at 8. The Gems took the lead in the top of the seventh. Hannibal’s Zach Nichols was hit by a pitch and scored on a groundout by Mattingly Romanin to tie the game at 9 in the bottom of the 8th. Four Cavemen pitchers kept Quincy scoreless from the 8th inning on as the game took on a personality along the lines of W.P. Kinsella's book 'The Iowa Baseball Confederacy'. In that novel, the 1908 Chicago Cubs and an amateur Iowa City area baseball team played for 40 days before the Cubs lost. It may have seemed like 40 days for home plate umpire Mike Hirstein. He saw a total of 556 pitches from eight Gems pitchers and seven Cavemen hurlers. The game took 5 hours and 55 minutes.
I called the play by play of that one here on khmoradio.com. The game itself wasn't that hard to deal with. The hard part was having to be in the KHMO studios the next morning for the regular Saturday morning news, blackout bingo and trading post. I slept in the building that morning--a laptop computer bag makes a decent pillow if you're tired enough. Bingo players would have been horrified to know how punchy I was during that morning's game. Walking back into Clemens Field late Saturday afternoon was a bit surrealistic too. "Didn't we just leave here? was the question of the day."
Here’s the box score from that ballgame …
