Last year, a Hannibal resident made a life-saving decision in the midst of a tragic loss. Melissa Cogdal donated both of her son’s kidneys. He was 26 years old. That decision saved the lives of two Illinois residents.

Hannibal Regional was recently honored by Mid-America Transplant for their support of organ and tissue donations.  The hospital was presented with the Gift of Life Medal.

It is estimated that over 100,000 people are waiting for life-saving organs in the United States.  Every day 20 of those on an organ transplant waiting list die.

While up to 95% of U.S. adults support organ donation, only a little over 50% have signed up as potential donors.  One donor can save up to 8 lives.

With April designated as National Donate Life Month, Hannibal Regional hopes to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation. More information is available at missouriorgandonor.com and organdonor.gov.
