(Jefferson City, Mo.)—Six million dollars of additional claim payments went to Missourians who filed complaints against insurance companies in the first quarter of 2013.

The Missouri Department of Insurance handled over 900 formal complaints and assisted over 2,300 consumers in writing.  Another 5,000 received help by phone.

Health insurance generated the most complaints, followed by auto and homeowners insurance.  The top reasons for complaints were claim denials and processing delays.

Consumers with insurance concerns should call the department’s Insurance Consumer Hotline at 1-800-726-7390 or visit insurance.mo.gov.
