It has almost become a tradition around this time of year - Tax Free Holiday in Missouri. This is a way for families to save money when making Back to School Purchases.

According to the Missouri Department of Revenue's Website: By state law, the sales tax holiday begins on the first Friday in August and continues through the following Sunday. In 2013, the three-day holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 2, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 4. Certain back-to-school purchases, such as clothing, school supplies, computers, and other items as defined by the statute, are exempt from sales tax for this time period only.

The items eligible for Tax Free status are:

  • Clothing – any article having a taxable value of $100 or less
  • School supplies – not to exceed $50 per purchase
  • Computer software – taxable value of $350 or less
  • Personal computers – not to exceed $3,500
  • Computer peripheral devices – not to exceed $3,500

Something to be aware of: some counties and municipalities are not participating in the Tax Free Weekend. That means that the items above are exempt from the state sales tax (4.225%), but the county and local sales taxes would still be charged.

Missouri counties in our area that have chosen not to participate are Pike (Bowling Green), Audrain (Mexico), and Boone (Columbia). Missouri cities that have elected not to participate are Palmyra, Moberly, Columbia, and Moscow Mills. Find the complete list of counties and municipalities not participating by following this link.
