On May 20, 2013, straight-line winds from severe storms resulted in significant damage to homes and businesses in Hannibal. A train derailed along Quincy's riverfront on Monday night. KHQA is reporting that a problem with the tracks switch is what lead to the accident. Cleanup crews were on the scene early Tuesday morning to begin removing the derailed cars. Both Bonansinga Drive and Front Street are open to traffic. Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes claimed at least eight lives on Sunday, as a path of storms tore through the Midwest. One of the communities that suffered the most damage was Washington, Illinois in Tazewell County.
Following a bout of severe weather that passed through the area on Wednesday night, residents of Monroe City are now cleaning up debris scattered throughout the town. Monroe County was under a tornado warning on Wednesday, and Monroe County Sheriff's deputies report that a tornado did touch down south of Madison.
