One man is hospitalized in Columbia following an early morning officer involved shooting in Paris Missouri.

The Missouri Highway Patrol says Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies were called at 12:03 this (FR) morning to a report of a man using a hatchet to break into a vehicle in Madison. A deputy observed the suspect leave the area in a vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. A pursuit ensued along US 24 toward Paris. Shortly after 1 a-m… Monroe County deputies observed the suspect walking south along Missouri 15 in Paris carrying a hatchet and flashlight secured to a metal bat. The suspect approached deputies in a threatening manner… refused officer demands and gained entry to Hickman’s IGA.

A Monroe City Police K-9 unit was called in. Officers entered the building in an effort to take the man into custody. The suspect attacked a deputy and during the scuffle a Monroe City Police officer and a Monroe County deputy fired their duty weapons at the suspect. Reports indicate the suspect identified as 39 year old Kevin Marshall of Madison was hit twice and taken to University Hospital in Columbia with serious injuries. A Monroe County deputy sustained minor injuries and was taken by private vehicle to University Hospital in Columbia.
